3 Things To Do in Downtown Boston to Get Out of the Cold

This winter will go down as one of the worst in New England history, and as the snow mounts so do frustrations from cabin fever and the frigid temperatures. But there are plenty of options to get out of the cold, away from the snow, and enjoy Downtown Boston.

The "SKY" Exhibit at the Lafayette City Center Passageway

Get away from the drab winter to check out SKY - a new exhibit from the Griffin Museum of Photography that debuted on Feb. 18th at the Lafayette City Center Passageway. This exhibit is FREE for anyone to view. The Lafayette City Center Passageway (2 Avenue De Lafayette) links the Downtown Boston Macy's with the Hyatt Regency Boston, and is open to the public 10 am to 6 pm.

Here is an excerpt from the curator's statement, which can be viewed in its entirety here: "Since ancient times Man has been mesmerized by the sky. It has inspired us. We’ve written poems and sung about it, and danced by it. Before understanding, we prayed to it and feared it. Life and tragedy spring from it. We measure our goals against it (sky high) and solve problems because of it (blue skying). The possibilities in life are endless because of it (the sky’s the limit)."

Visit the Brattle Book Shop on West Street

Buzzfeed.com listed the Brattle Book Shop as one of "17 Bookstores That Will Change Your Life" -- for the entire world! Now how about that for an endorsement to visit the book store that was founded in "Cornhill section of Boston in 1825." The Gloss family has run the store since 1949. You'll often find proprietor Ken Gloss at the store (and appearing on TV as an expert appraiser on PBS' 'The Antiques Roadshow'). The Brattle Book Shop (9 West St.) "...carries an impressive stock of over 250,000 books, maps, prints, postcards and ephemeral items in all subjects." The store also sells used, out-of-print, and first edition books, as well as collectibles and fine leather bindings in its rare book room. And don't forget the outdoor sale lot, which the store's amazing team has often kept open this snowy winter! The shop is open 9 am - 5:30 pm, Monday-Saturday and can be reached at 617-542-0210.
